Education

The Faculty of Letters at Okayama University consists of one department, the Department of Humanities. After entering the university, students can take their time to decide on their major field of study; in the second year, students choose their affiliation from one of five majors, but this does not restrict them from taking courses in other fields. Students can also take courses in “clusters,” which are theme-based courses offered across disciplines, and “programs,” which are designed for practical language learning and qualification acquisition. Courses offered by other faculties and courses offered by the Consortium of Universities Okayama, a collaboration of 17 universities in Okayama Prefecture, are also available. In this way, students are able to assemble their own four-year study program and ultimately choose one of the 21 areas of specialization beyond the five fields to complete their graduation thesis and graduate with the ability to conduct practical research.
