私はイギリスとアイルランドの現代文学の歴史を専門に研究しています。特に重点をおいているのはジェイムズ・ジョイスの作品です。２０１４年から２０１８年にかけて、「ジョイスとアメリカ」というプロジェクトに取り組んできました。その研究は、ジョイスの作品におけるアメリカの歴史、文化、政治の表象についての最初の研究書となる単著の出版に結実しました（オックスフォード大学出版局：２０１８年）。私の研究方法は常に歴史主義的です。つまりある作品が作られ、読まれていく歴史的環境を詳細に理解することが、その作品をより深く理解することに繋がるという見方を取っています。その中で歴史的な領域とトランスアトランティックな領域の両方にまたがる学際的研究に力を入れています。歴史学的領域の研究については、近年のジョイスとアイルランド軍公文書の研究（２０１６）があり、トランスアトランティックな領域については、ディケンズ（２０１３）、ロレンス（２０１５、２０１６）、ワイルド（２０１６）等の作家における英米間の文学的繋がりを、研究、授業、論文の中で論じています。また私はモダニズム文学の残した歴史的遺産についての研究に幅広い関心を抱いています。特に取り組んでいるのは、アイルランドにおけるアンソニー・クローニンとジョイスの受容についてです。さらに私は、歴史主義的アプローチを補うため、公文書資料の発掘とジェネティック批評（ある作品の創作過程、すなわち下書き、草稿、ノート等の批評的分析）の方法に大いに関心があります。そのため２０１６年から２０１７年にかけての研究業績には、アイルランド国立図書館に保管されているジョイスの草稿に基づいた新発見も含まれています。私が現在進めている、公文書に基づいた越境的研究は、アイルランド関連ではありますが、日本に関連した私の最初の研究でもあります。一つは１８９０年から１９２２年にかけて定期刊行物に掲載された文学に見られる日本の受容の問題に焦点を当てた研究です。もう一つは、日本が重要な役割を果たした美学的交流の場としての、モダニズムの「リトルマガジン」についての研究です。また私は宮沢賢治の童話の共訳（２０１６）を手掛けてきました。近い将来、彼の作品の英訳をさらに出版することを考えています。

My research focuses on the history of modern British and Irish literature, with an emphasis on the works of James Joyce. Between 2014 and 2018, my research was predominantly focused upon a project on Joyce and America: the first book-length study of the representations of the history, culture, and politics of the United States in Joyce’s works (Oxford University Press, 2018). My methodology here and elsewhere is historicist —— that is, I would argue that a detailed understanding of the historical circumstances in which a work was produced and consumed can lead to a greater understanding of that work——with a stress on interdisciplinary work in historical and transatlantic fields. Research in the former field has led recently to work on Joyce and the Irish Military Archives (2016), while the latter has led to research, teaching, and publications on AngloAmerican literary connections in writers including Dickens (2013), Lawrence (2015, 2016), and Wilde (2016). Moreover, the historical legacy of literary modernism is a broad area of interest for me, which has led more specifically to work on Anthony Cronin and Joyce’s reception in Ireland (2016). Additionally, I have also been particularly keen to exploit archival resources and the methods of ‘genetic criticism’ (that is, critical analyses of a work’s composition history: drafts, manuscripts, notebooks, etc.) to complement this historicist approach. Accordingly, from 2016-17 my research output included findings based on the National Library of Ireland’s Joyce manuscript holdings. Other cross-boundary, archive-based projects I am currently developing relate to Ireland again, but also Japan for the first time: one study concentrates on Irish perceptions of Japan in the period 1890-1922 as expressed in the periodical literature of the time; and the other is a study of modernism’s little magazines as a site of aesthetic interactions in which Japan played a significant role. In addition, I have worked as a co-translator on certain works of Kenji Miyazawa (2016), and I hope to publish more translations of his work in the near future.

Teaching:

At Okayama University, my undergraduate teaching covers a wide range of twentieth-century British and Irish authors, including W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, J.G. Ballard, and Kazuo Ishiguro. I also teach graduate courses on ‘the idea of the modern’ in early twentieth-century literature, and critical approaches to contemporary British and Irish writing. In addition, I organize and chair a research seminar that concentrates on Joyce’s Ulysses, to which students are warmly invited (and occasionally attend).

My teaching philosophy is heavily influenced by my research methodology and I aim to give students a solid grounding in the history of a work or literary period to guide them in their interpretations. Students in my classes engage with the cultural histories of Britain and Ireland, as well as key critical approaches that emerged during the twentieth century: for example, postcolonialism, gender and cultural studies, and so on. Students will then be encouraged to analyze literary texts by applying those key concepts and theories in support of their own original ideas. This approach provides students with a sturdy foundation for their own research and writing.

私の指導方法は私の研究方法を色濃く反映しています。学生の皆さんが文学の解釈をする際、その作品の歴史や文学的時代区分について確かな拠りどころを得られるよう目指しています。私のクラスの学生たちはイギリスとアイルランドの文化の歴史や、２０世紀に現れた重要な批評的アプローチに取り組んでいます。例えば、ポストコロニアリズム、ジェンダー研究、カルチュラル・スタディーズなどです。学生たちは自分自身の独創的な解釈にこれらの重要な概念や理論を応用することによって、文学テキストを分析することができるように指導されます。このようなアプローチによって、学生の皆さんは自分の研究や論文作成に確かな土台を築くことができるでしょう。
