Aesthetics and History of Art

Here at Okayama University, we have the advantage of being able to put together perspectives from both Aesthetics and History of Art. Faculty members working in Aesthetics and History of Art specialize in the History of Japanese Art, the History of Western Art, Art Studies, and Theater and Literature. Students interested in other subjects are also welcome to learn from a faculty member in a related field.

Students studying Aesthetics and History of Art are self-directed free-thinkers, who can develop a clear awareness of various issues.

Aesthetics

The Aesthetics major focuses on fine arts, and specifically on two main streams: narrowly defined aesthetics or “creation,” and studies of art which analyze “reception.” Every civilization has created arts, including pictures, music, theatre, architecture, and garments. Human beings began to paint and sing before they even started to speak or write. Decorations, games, travel, landscapes, and various other areas are also subjects of Aesthetics research.

History of Art

The History of Art major interprets Japanese and Western Art works from historical perspectives. Buddha statues, ukiyo-e, oil paintings, and photographs are not only beautiful, but also hold our beliefs and desires. In History of Art courses we consider how art works have driven society, the economy, and politics.
